Tuning Into Your Body During Stressful Times
Recently my fiancé said, "It's a good thing we have a large plate." In a week and a half I'm embarking on a vacation to meet his seven brothers and sisters and their families for the first time, moving ninety miles east less than a week after we return to a town we've visited once, planning our wedding in the spring, defending my psyche against intrusive work crews who pound, sand and drill seven days a week in the house two feet from my residence, trying to finish a memoir, and yesterday I learned that my landlord died suddenly and while being shocked I'm also worried about getting our rent deposit back. The Choice to Be Self-centered
Buddhism teaches that life is suffering and when we accept and surrender to this fact we can then learn to cease fighting and find internal harmony. While I try to wholeheartedly embrace Buddhist philosophy I definitely have a hard time accepting suffering. In February I met a woman whose skin was clear and smooth, her smile infectious. When she informed me her fortieth birthday was coming soon, I was surprised. Maintain Strength While Being Soft
Recently I saw a picture of Madonna in the local newspaper who at the age of fifty is back on tour. Her arms were sculpted, biceps and surface veins protruding. My first reaction was to envy her and be jealous that she has money to pay personal trainers and free time to exercise so rigorously, but after the picture rested in my mind for a while, I realized her arms looked masculine and that even as a mother in middle age, she hasn’t softened.
